Sarkis and Siran Women's & Children's Pavilion

The Sarkis & Siran Gabrellian Women’s and Children’s Pavilion at Hackensack University Medical Center was one of the first inpatient hospital facilities to seek LEED certification in New Jersey. It was part of the Green Guide for Healthcare pilot program which was used by the US Green Building Council to develop the forthcoming LEED for Healthcare rating system. The Women's & Children's Pavilion was also awarded the Form and Function prize and named one of the "Top 10 Green Hospitals in the US: 2006" by the Green Guide. Below are some of the key attributes of the project:

Rubber Flooring - In an effort to eliminate PVC from all construction materials, rubber flooring was used in lieu of vinyl tile. Rubber flooring is also a non-petroleum based flooring product which is recyclable and biodegradable.

Rooftop Gardens - A vegetative roof is installed at the Women's & Children's Pavilion to reduce storm water runoff as well as provide better energy efficiency as a result of increased insulation. The roof garden also serves as an area of respite for patients, staff, and visitors.

Wheatboard Casework - All casework substrate material is made of wheatboard. In addition to the elimination of particle board which contains formaldehyde, wheatboard is also a rapidly renewable product.

FSC Certified Eucalyptus Wallpanels - Wood products used in the construction of the Women's & Children's Pavilion are certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC). FSC certified wood products are used to promote responsible forest management practices, which minimizes the negative impacts of construction material harvesting on forests.

Cotton Insulation - Bonded Logic Ultra Touch cotton insulation is used to insulate the building instead of conventional fiberglass products. The product contains a high recycled content, is rapidly renewable, provides similar R-values to fiberglass, and also contains no harmful chemicals or known carcinogens which can be found in conventional insulation.
